word of the year

What makes this layout different from other daily layouts is that I have included a mechanism to track or reflect on the word of the year.

What is a “Word of the Year”?

  • For me, choosing a “Word of the Year” is about choosing an energy I want to embody or experience during a year. Most of the time, the meaning of the word or the energy of it will be supportive to the goals I am working on that year.
    • For example, if my goal is my physical health I might choose “Healthy” or “strength” as my word.
    • Another example, if my goals for the year are financial I might choose “Debt-free” or “abundance” as my word of the year.
  • A “Word of the Year” might also be referenced as a point of focus to guide thinking, intention or actions.

Why choose a “Word of the Year” to focus on?

  • It can influence behavior especially when we are trying to adopt new ways of being.
    • This exercise is often about a way of doing things or being so when we keep a specific word in focus this can guide our thinking and, hopefully, our actions.
  • It can be a great reminder of the energy we wish to embody or the lens through which we want to see things we move through the year.
  • Tracking and reflecting on a word of the year can give helpful clues and insights on the things in your life that align or do NOT align with the energy of the word you are focusing on.

How to track or reflect on your word of the year?

  • I have found it is most beneficial to periodically check-in and reflect on your chosen word of the year and write or think about the following:
    • “Do I currently embody the energy of this word?” For example, do I feel free? Do I feel autonomous? Do I feel healthy?
      • If not, what is standing in the way of feeling aligned with the energy of the word? This will give clues on things in your life that may need to change or pivots you may need to make.
    • “Does this word still “work” for me?” If not, think about changing it.
  • Use a scale of 1 – 10 to determine how much you feel in alignment with your word of the year. If your score is under a 5 – think about why that might be? What is happening in your life that is causing the low score? These observations will help you course correct.
