This post is intended to be a mini Five of Pentacles Tarot Guide. It is important to mention that the longer you work with the cards the more you will discover how they speak to you. For example, the Five of Pentacles does have a theme and traditional meaning but I recommend leaving “space” for the card to speak to you. Over time, you may discover that the card represents unique insights or themes for you personally.

Suit of Pentacles Summary

Numerology of the #5 – Themes
- Number 5 energy is dynamic and resonates with action, change, impulsivity, a lack of control and is responsive in the moment.
- Positive energies of the number 5 are stimulating, charismatic, optimistic, inspiring, daring, adventurous, energetic, sensual, tolerant, flexible, adaptable, curious, enthusiastic, easy going, and free spirited.
- Negative energies are irresponsibility, boredom, and excitability. 5’s can also be associated with indulgence.
Five of Pentacles Tarot – Upright Meaning
- Represents Mars (in Earth), Fixed / Taurus energy
- The traditional meaning of this card is material and spiritual poverty; a sense of displacement and helplessness. The querent should be careful not to allow this sense of loss to impact their health. It may also be a good time for them to be cautious with money. Although they are experiencing a low point financially the situation will change for the better. It is important to have faith because this card is also about divine intervention.
- This card is often seen as a foreshadowing of the 10 of Pentacles. Abundance is coming but the energies are currently blocked as a result of the querent’s perspective.
- The 5 of Pentacles indicates someone who is so consumed with their own pain and experience of poverty (real or imagined) that they are unable to see that help or a solution is near.
- The Five of Pentacles can also represent a “dark night of the soul”. It is the card of suicide and isolation. The querent or someone around them is very depressed and they have walked away from help or aren’t noticing the help around them. They believe they have no place to turn for help. It is time for this person to look around for help.
- The lack experienced in the Five of Pentacles feels as if there is no money in the bank when, in fact, this lack comes from the mind of the querent rather than their actual financial situation. Maybe they still have money, but it is not enough for them to do the work they need.
- This card can also represent the normal challenges and struggles that are present in relationships (romantic and familial) over time. Life generally feels like a struggle and old problems and hurts resurface.
Shadow Side of the Five of Pentacles
- The 5 of Pentacle reversed indicates that there will be financial improvement or resolution after a period of challenges and hardships. The querent will rebound and they are entering a time of recovery where they can resurrect themselves after significant loss.
- There may also be a need for the querent to “cut their losses” and move on. If they continue to be conservation with finances their circumstances will improve. There is no divine intervention with the reversed 5 of Pentacles. The querent is the one who will save themselves.
- This card reversed can also represent a release, healing or breakthrough of old dynamics that were holding the querent back. A transformational moment for the betterment of the relationship or circumstance.
