This post is intended to be a mini Knight of Cups Tarot Guide. It is important to mention that the longer you work with the cards the more you will discover how they speak to you. For example, the Knight of Cups does have a theme and traditional meaning but I recommend leaving “space” for the card to speak to you. Over time, you may discover that the card represents unique insights or themes for you personally.
Suit of Cups Summary

Knight of Cups Tarot – Upright Meaning
- As a person
- AKA – Prince
- Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces
- Water + Air
- The Knight of Cups is an intelligent man who is charismatic and has great social skills. He can be an inspiring role model and a romantic. He is also sensitive, a dreamer, intuitive and appreciates beauty in all things. Because he is sensitive, his feelings are hurt easily and doesn’t take criticism very well. He is a young man who is learning to control his emotions, hone his intuition, and may be learning to work with the occult in some way. A man of secrecy in many ways.
- Figurative meaning
- The Knight of Cups can represent love, romance and sweet nothing. A romantic message is on the way.
- This card can also show up when the situation in question is lacking stability in some way or as a reminder to be careful with whom you share information.
- Another interpretation is that the situation requires being more assertive or expressive of one’s emotions.
- In a love reading, this card represents a passionate suitor in the querent’s life.
Multiple Knights showing up in a reading
- Two Knights in a reading can mean that there will be a 1:1 conflict with another person.
- Three Knights in a reading can indicate a brotherhood of some sort or a sudden change that will take the querent by surprise.
- Four Knights in a reading can indicate a war or combat situation (e.g. military)
Shadow Side of the Knight of Cups
- As a person
- A self-centered young man who can be needy and attention seeking. He may believe his talents are greater than they actually are.
- Figurative meaning
- The Knight of Cups reversed can represent discouragement, being out of touch of reality or being withdrawn from the world.
- The querent may be in a situation where they are trying to fit in.
- This card could also represent a young man who is in the querent’s life and is having a negative impact in some way.
- Since the Knight cards often represent action, when it shows up in reverse it can mean that the querent is refraining from taking action in a particular relationship such as not expressing their emotional state in a healthy way.
