This article covers the open Root Energy Center in Human Design. The word “open” is also known as “undefined” or “white” in Human Design. When an energy center is “open” or “undefined” it means that it is designed to be receptive and pick up on energy and information from the outside world. All open energy centers in a person’s chart present an opportunity for great wisdom and have gifts and challenges associated with them.

Undefined Root Energy Center

The Root Energy Center

  • The Root Energy Center is the square energy center located on the bottom of the bodygraph chart.
  • This energy center is a motor and a pressure center. It creates momentum inside the body.
  • It is about getting things into motion, the drive to do things, get up and go. It ignites the fuel to start something.

The Open (or white) Root Energy Center

The Power of an Open Root

  • Individuals with an undefined root person benefit from having deadlines or understanding by which day something needs to be done. That said, it is not good to rush this individual or put pressure on them.
  • Those with an open Root energy center pick up on the pressure in a room or situations that are very charged or overheated and can use this information as wisdom. In the high expression of an open root energy center, they have the potential to understand deeply how stress functions, how to use it properly, and how to distinguish between good stress & unhealthy stress.
  • They will feel adrenaline rushes that have the potential to propel a stuck situation into moving forward. This pressure can ignite them into action as well and they can use these bursts of energy to get important things done if it feels right according to their strategy and authority.

The Challenge of an Open Root

  • It can be difficult for those with an open root energy center to know how to pace themselves and they are not designed to run on consistent pressure, timelines, or tight deadlines. When they feel overwhelmed by pressures and deadlines, they need to realize this pressure is not their own but they CAN leverage it and ride the energetic wave of other people for short periods of time.  They should get good at striking the balance between feeling the pressure and walking away to take deep breaths vs. taking advantage of the opportunity to ride the energy.
  • This person may not be good at making their own timeline or deadlines. When this individual has something they need to get done they should wait until they have to do it this is when they will be most productive and will have the energy to do the thing. (The drive or pressure is NOT there until it needs to be done).
  • A challenge associated with an open root is experiencing a never-ending sense of pressure to get things done. It always feels like freedom lies on the other side of finishing the thing in front of them. They should take a moment to slow down and remind themselves that it’s okay to set something aside.  Resting is sometimes more important than completing the item on their list.
