Why You Don’t Need Human Design - Or Anything Else

Something I have been thinking a lot about lately is why you don’t need Human design – or anything else! Please find below a link to a video where I share my thoughts and I am also including an edited transcript below.

my thoughts on human design

Today I’m going to talk about something that might sound like a 180, but it’s really not. I’m here to talk about why you don’t need human design or anything else for that matter. And the “anything else” includes astrology. It includes numerology. It includes Myers-Briggs, the Enneagram, DISC, etc.

First, I want to say that I am very passionate about human design. I’m very passionate about astrology. I’m very passionate about Myers-Briggs. These are tools that I’ve used for quite a long time. I’m almost 50 years old, and I’ve spent a long time paying to understand more about myself through these different tools and frameworks.  But it’s occurred to me lately that we really don’t need this stuff. And at the end of the day, we just don’t even need it because….Hear me out.

I’m not saying to never get a human design reading or to never go see your favorite astrologer. I’m certainly not saying that because it can be super helpful. But when it comes to self-discovery, trying to figure out our purpose, why we’re here, and how to move through the world in alignment, it all comes down to the fact that tools are validating because they are all telling us to come back to OURSELVES.

I know this sounds so reductive, but it really struck me that our bodies know what is right for us. Our inner knowing knows what is right for us. And the problem is that we get so stuck on external voices telling us how to do things, or maybe we’re witnessing somebody else, like a parent or sibling, doing things a very specific way. We’re hearing voices tell us what we need to do to be successful. You need to be consistent and disciplined, right? Or to lose weight, you can’t eat after 7 p.m.  And the problem is that we hear all these things, and we stop just tuning into ourselves. We stop knowing what it feels like when things are in alignment. How does it feel in my body? When something feels energetically correct for me, what does that expansive feeling feel like? How can we tell the difference between feeling expansive versus feeling contracted about something? How do we know when we are doing something from a place of resistance?

We’re doing things a certain way because we think we should instead of tuning in ourselves and saying, “How would it feel to do it my way? And what IS my way?” How valuable would it be to sit with these questions and be willing to experiment with the answers that come up? So let me give you a couple of examples to illustrate what I mean.

I mentioned that the world tells us that we need to be consistent and disciplined to be successful. From a Human Design perspective and from a human perspective, some of us have a gift for consistency and discipline, and some do not. I am one of those people who is NOT designed to be consistent or disciplined. But if I listen to the outside world, then I’m going to start going against my true nature, trying to do things in a different way. I’m probably going to try to establish some sort of consistent routine that I think will make me more successful, because that’s what the world tells me to do.

In Human Design, a bodygraph chart will tell us whether we are designed to leverage discipline and consistency as tools to get where we want to go. And this is where I think the Human Design framework can help us. It can validate our personal experience and remind us of who we are and how we are designed to move through the world.  When I get this validation, I can take a deep breath and now have the freedom to say, “Okay, I can release that expectation of myself.”

But at the end of the day, I didn’t NEED human design to tell me that. Because if I had tuned in and TRUSTED the way that I operate naturally, the way that feels expansive and good to me, instead of doubting myself and listening to outside voices, then I would have come to this on my own without needing some external source to validate that for me.

So this is all food for thought, and if you don’t want to spend money on astrology or a human design reader, then really just start paying attention to what makes you feel expansive. What makes you feel good? What makes you feel in alignment? How does that show up for you?

Also, start to recognize where you are allowing external voices or other people’s influence to shape how you do things. Where are you allowing others to make you feel like you’re doing things the wrong way? And instead, start tuning into how to do it in a way that feels right to you. This is all easier said than done.

Yes, I think that these systems (Human Design, Astrology, etc) are great because they can be useful. I don’t think they’re perfect systems, and I think that they’re about 90 percent correct. But we really don’t need them; we should be listening to ourselves and trusting our process. I think that’s the big lesson that I’ve taken away after years and years of self-discovery that I’ve been going through.
