the 5 clairs explained: different types of intuition and inner guidance

Your intuition does not always feel like a dramatic psychic moment or a sudden message from beyond. More often, it shows up in subtle, everyday ways — through a feeling in your body, a quiet inner knowing, a mental image, a word or phrase that seems to arrive from nowhere, or a sense that something is simply “off” or aligned.

The 5 Clairs are one way to understand how your intuition may naturally communicate with you. The word “clair” comes from the French word for “clear,” and each Clair describes a different intuitive sense: clear seeing, clear feeling, clear hearing, clear knowing, and clear smelling.

Some teachers and intuitive development experts include additional Clairs, such as clear tasting or clear touching. This article will focus on the five most commonly recognized Clairs: clairvoyance, clairsentience, clairaudience, claircognizance, and clairalience.

intuition shows up differently for different people

Intuition does not work the same way for everyone.

For some people, it shows up as a body response — a clear yes or no, a sense of expansion or contraction, or a physical feeling that something is right or wrong.

For others, it comes through emotional clarity, inner knowing, dreams, symbols, words, sounds, scents, or subtle energetic awareness.

This is why the 5 Clairs can be helpful. They give language to the different ways intuitive information may come through, such as clear seeing, clear feeling, clear hearing, clear knowing, or clear smelling.

No intuitive style is better than another. The goal is not to force your intuition to work like someone else’s. The goal is to understand how your inner guidance naturally communicates with you.

clairvoyance: inner seeing

Clairvoyance means “clear seeing.” This is intuition that comes through images, symbols, mental pictures, dreams, visions, or visual impressions.

This does not always mean you will see a “vision” or anything with your eyes physically. For many people, clairvoyance is more subtle. You may get a flash, mental image, picture a scene in your mind, see colors or symbols, or receive intuitive information through dreams.

Clairvoyance may show up as

  • Seeing mental images or symbols
  • Having vivid dreams
  • Getting visual flashes or impressions
  • Imagining a clear outcome or direction
  • Feeling drawn to signs, colors, images, or visual patterns

Clairvoyance is often about learning to trust the images or symbols that come through without immediately dismissing them as “just imagination.”

clairsentience: feeling and sensing

Clairsentience means “clear feeling.” This is intuition that comes through emotions, physical sensations, body cues, empathy, or energetic awareness.

If you are clairsentient, you may feel things in your body before your mind can explain them. You may sense the energy of a room, feel tension around certain people, or notice expansion, contraction, heaviness, or ease when making decisions.

Clairsentience may show up as…

  • A strong gut feeling
  • Physical sensations in the body
  • Feeling other people’s emotions
  • Sensing when something feels “off.”
  • Noticing expansion, contraction, heaviness, or relief

Clairsentience is powerful, but discernment is the key. The practice is learning the difference between a true intuitive body signal and an emotional reaction, anxiety response, or old pattern being activated.

clairaudience: inner hearing

Clairaudience means “clear hearing.” This is intuition that comes through words, sounds, phrases, music, or an inner voice.

Clairaudience does not always show up as hearing an external voice. More often, clairaudience feels like a word, phrase, lyric, or message that comes into your awareness at the right time. You may “hear” guidance internally, notice repeated phrases, or receive insight through sound.

Clairaudience may show up as…

  • Hearing a word or phrase internally
  • Getting messages through songs or lyrics
  • Noticing repeated words or statements
  • Having a strong inner dialogue
  • Receiving insight through sound, tone, or voice

Clairaudience is often subtle. It may feel like a quiet inner phrase that cuts through the noise and gives you something meaningful to pay attention to.

claircognizance: inner knowing

Claircognizance means “clear knowing.” This is intuition that comes through sudden insight, certainty, or knowing something without knowing exactly how you know.

This Clair can be easy to overlook because it may not come with a dramatic feeling, image, or sign. You may simply know what is true, what needs to happen, or what direction feels correct before you have a logical explanation.

Claircognizance may show up as…

  • Sudden downloads or insights
  • Knowing something without proof
  • Having a clear sense of truth
  • Receiving ideas fully formed
  • Feeling certain about a decision before you can explain why

Claircognizance is not about being impulsive or assuming every thought is intuitive. It is about noticing the difference between mental chatter and a grounded inner knowing that feels clear, direct, and steady.

clairalience and clairgustance: smell and taste

Clairalience means “clear smelling,” and clairgustance means “clear tasting.” These Clairs are often discussed less often than the others, but they can still be meaningful intuitive senses for some people.

Clairalience may show up as noticing a scent associated with a memory, person, place, or an intuitive message. Clairgustance may show up as an unexplained taste or a strong intuitive association with flavor.

These may show up as…

  • Smelling something with no obvious physical source
  • Having scent memories connected to people or places
  • Associating certain smells with intuitive messages
  • Experiencing an unexplained taste
  • Receiving intuitive information through sensory memory

These Clairs are usually more subtle and less common, so they do not need to be the main focus. But they are worth mentioning because intuition can communicate through the senses in many different ways.

how to discover your intuitive “voice”

The easiest way to understand your intuitive style or voice is to pay attention to how guidance already shows up for you in everyday life.

Start by noticing what happens when you get a strong sense about something. Do you feel it in your body? Do you see an image? Hear a word or phrase? Just know? Pick up on someone’s emotions? Remember a scent, dream, or symbol?

Here are a few practical ways to observe your natural style

  • Look at your first response
Before you overthink, explain, or second-guess yourself, notice what came through first. Was it a feeling, image, word, knowing, or physical sensation?

  • Track your body cues
Pay attention to tension, ease, heaviness, expansion, contraction, excitement, or discomfort. These may point to clairsentience or body-based intuition.

  • Notice repeated images or symbols
If you often receive guidance through dreams, mental pictures, colors, signs, or visual patterns, clairvoyance may be one of your stronger intuitive senses.

  • Pay attention to words, phrases, or songs
If a phrase pops into your mind, a lyric feels meaningful, or you keep hearing the same message repeated, clairaudience may be active.

  • Watch for sudden knowing
If you often know something without being able to explain how, or an answer arrives fully formed, you may connect with claircognizance.

  • Observe subtle sensory memories
A scent, taste, or strong sensory association may sometimes carry intuitive meaning, especially if it arrives unexpectedly or feels connected to a person, place, or memory.

It is important not to force an answer or label yourself. Your intuitive style may include more than one Clair, and it may shift depending on the situation.

intuition vs. imagination vs. anxiety

Intuition, imagination, and anxiety can all happen internally, which is why they can be easy to confuse. The difference is usually in the quality of the experience.

  • Intuition often feels clear, calm, direct, or quietly persistent. It may come through as a feeling, an image, a phrase, a body cue, or an inner knowing. Even when intuition gives you a warning, it usually feels steady rather than chaotic.
  • Imagination is creative, flexible, and expansive. It can help you visualize possibilities, receive symbols, explore ideas, and connect with deeper insight. Imagination is not “bad” or “fake” — in fact, it can be one way intuition speaks. The key is discernment: not every image, thought, or fantasy is an intuitive message.
  • Anxiety often feels urgent, repetitive, and fear-based. It tends to spiral into thoughts on worst-case scenarios, pressure you to act immediately, or make you feel like you need certainty before you can move forward.

A helpful way to tell the difference is to ask yourself…

  • Does this feel clear or chaotic?
  • Is this information steady, or is it looping over and over?
  • Does this feel like guidance, creative possibility, or fear trying to protect me?
  • Am I receiving insight, or am I trying to control the outcome?

The goal is not to dismiss your imagination or shame your anxiety. Imagination can be a beautiful, intuitive doorway, and anxiety may be trying to keep you safe. But when you can recognize the difference, it becomes easier to trust your intuition without getting pulled into fear or fantasy.

intuition and human design

While the 5 Clairs describe how intuitive information may come through — such as seeing, feeling, hearing, knowing, or sensing — Human Design can help you understand how your body is designed to make aligned decisions.

In Human Design, there is something called “Strategy and Authority,” and your Authority shows how you are designed to find clarity so you can make aligned decisions. For some people, intuition may feel like an emotional truth that becomes clear over time. For others, it may show up as an instinctive knowing, a gut response, or a need to hear themselves talk something through before the answer clicks.
