human design channels

how channels shape your energy and expression

Human Design channels are formed when two gates connect, creating a complete flow of energy between energy centers. While individual gates describe specific traits, channels represent consistent energy patterns that influence how you express yourself and interact with the world.

Channels add another layer of understanding your energy and natural talents, strengths, and behavior patterns.

This guide will help you understand how channels work and how to explore the channels in your chart.

what are the human design channels?

A channel is formed when two connected gates are activated in your chart. There are 36 possible channels in the Human Design bodygraph, and each one represents a complete energetic pathway between two centers, creating a consistent and reliable expression of that energy.

Channels

  • connect two centers
  • create consistent energy
  • influence personality
  • shape strengths and behaviors

gates vs channels

A gate is one half of a channel and represents a specific theme or potential in your Human Design chart. When two corresponding gates connect between two energy centers, they form a channel, creating a complete pathway of consistent energy. The energy or gift within one gate is complementary to the corresponding gate, and together they complete and enhance each other’s expression.

When an individual has both gates, the full channel is defined, and they have consistent access to the complete expression of that energy. When only one gate is present, the person has consistent access to that specific gift but experiences the complementary energy of the other gate more inconsistently — often through interactions with others or changes in environment.

Channels and Definition in Human Design

Channels don’t just connect energy centers—they also create what’s known as definition in your chart. Your definition describes how your energy is wired internally and how consistently it flows.

defined vs. undefined channels

Defined channels:

  • consistent source of energy
  • reliable traits
  • represent consistent strengths, talents, motivations, and drives

Undefined:

  • not activated
  • experienced inconsistently
  • influenced or activated by others

channels and authority

Channels contribute to your overall energy by creating consistent themes, strengths, and patterns in how energy flows through your chart. They show how your energy centers are connected and how you naturally express yourself.

Depending on which channels are activated — and which energy centers are defined through those connections — this ultimately determines your authority type. Your authority is not random; it emerges from the specific circuitry in your bodygraph. While channels describe how your energy operates, your authority defines how you are designed to make decisions within that energy.
