human design definition: single, split, triple and quadruple explained

Human Design Definition describes how the defined centers in your chart are connected through channels, which can give you insight into how your energy flows and how you process life internally. Whether you have Single Definition, Split Definition, Triple Split Definition, or Quadruple Split Definition, this part of the chart can help explain your sense of internal consistency, where you may feel a sense of separation, and how connection with others can influence your experience.

This article will break down the different definition types in Human Design at a high level so you can better understand what your chart is showing you. If you’re new to Human Design, the Human Design Guide is a helpful place to start for a broader overview of the system. And because definition is created through connections between centers, the Human Design Channels page is a great next step if you want to understand how those energetic pathways work in the bodygraph.

Definition and Circuitry in a Human Design Bodygraph Chart

human design definition: what it means and how it works

In Human Design, definition refers to how energy is connected and processed within your chart. More specifically, it describes how quickly or smoothly energetics flow through the bodygraph, depending on which centers are connected to one another via defined channels. This gives you insight into whether your energy operates more internally or moves through distinct areas that may feel more distinct.

Definition matters because it adds another layer to how your chart functions beyond just your type. Your energy type, strategy, and authority are determined by which energy centers are defined, or colored in, but definition shows how those defined centers work together as a system.

In your chart, definition appears through the connected colored-in centers and channels, helping explain how you process experiences, where you may feel energetic consistency, and how connection with others can influence your experience.

In simple terms, definition reflects your internal wiring and the way energy flows consistently within you. The more connected your defined centers are, the more naturally that energy tends to move as one integrated system.

types of definition

Single Definition

  • Single Definition means that all of the defined energy centers in the chart are connected and “talking” to each other. This creates a more fully connected, self-contained flow of energy, where processing tends to happen with greater internal ease and consistency. People with Single Definition often experience their energy as moving through the chart in a more integrated way.

Split Definition

Split Definition means there are two separate groups, or “teams,” of defined centers in the chart. Each group is internally connected, but the two groups are not directly connected to each other, so the energy does not flow through the whole chart as one fully integrated system.

There are actually two types of Split Definition:

  • Simple Split Definition means there are two connected groups of centers that can be linked by a single gate activation. In other words, the split is relatively close, and only one bridging gate would be needed to connect the two sides so they can “talk” to each other more directly.
  • Complex Split Definition also means there are two separate groups of centers, but the groups are farther apart in the chart. Because of that, they cannot be connected by just one gate activation. More than one bridge is needed, which can create a stronger sense of separation between the two sides of the chart.

Triple-Split Definition

Triple Split Definition means there are three separate groups, or “teams,” of defined centers in the chart. Each group is internally connected, but the three groups are not directly connected to one another, so energy tends to flow through multiple distinct areas rather than as a single unified flow.

  • In the example provided above, the three teams are: 1) the Root and Spleen Centers, 2) the Solar Plexus and Throat Centers, and 3) the Sacral and G Centers. Because the energy is moving through three separate clusters, people with Triple Split Definition may experience more spacious or layered processing and can sometimes benefit from movement, variety, or different people and environments that help bridge those internal splits.

Quadruple Split Definition

Quadruple Split definition means that there are four “teams” in the chart.

  • Quadruple Split Definition means there are four separate groups, or “teams,” of defined centers in the chart. Each group is internally connected, but the four groups are not all directly connected to one another, which can create a more segmented or compartmentalized way of processing energy.
In the example chart provided above, the four teams are: 1) the Root and Spleen Centers, 2) the Solar Plexus, Sacral, and Ego Centers, 3) the G Center and Throat Center, and 4) the Ajna and Crown Centers.
  • Because energy is moving through four distinct clusters, people with Quadruple Split Definition may process life in a more layered way and may notice that different environments, experiences, or connections help different parts of them come online.

No Definition

In practice, having no definition means the person has no defined or colored centers in the chart, which is the case for a Reflector. Because there are no internally connected defined centers, there is no fixed internal wiring, unlike the other types.

It is worth noting that “No Definition” is not usually the standard term used in Human Design, but some people use it informally to describe a Reflector chart. If you keep the term, it helps to explain it lightly and clearly: this person is a Reflector, with all centers open, making them especially receptive to the people and environments around them.

definition vs circuitry

It can be helpful to understand that definition and circuitry are not the same thing.

Definition refers to how energy is connected in the chart — in other words, which defined centers are linked together through channels and how energy flows internally through those connections.

Circuitry, on the other hand, refers to how that energy expresses itself. It describes the channels and gates’ thematic nature — for example, whether energy is more individual, tribal, or collective in how it shows up and operates.

So, definition tells you about the structure of the connection, while circuitry gives you more insight into the flavor and purpose of the energy being expressed.

how this connects to the channels

Definition is created through channels. When two gates connect and form a full channel, they link two energy centers together and create a consistent pathway of energy in the chart. This is what turns individual defined centers into connected “teams” and creates your definition type.

If you want to explore this more deeply, the Human Design Channels Guide is the best next step, because channels are the actual mechanics that create definition in the bodygraph.

how to work with your definition

Your definition can help you understand how you naturally process energy, experiences, and interactions. Rather than trying to force yourself into someone else’s style, it is more supportive to notice how your own internal wiring works and honor what helps things click for you.

Practical tips:

  • Observe how you process things — do insights come together internally, or do they unfold over time, in conversation, movement, or across different environments?
  • Notice what helps you feel clear — certain people, settings, or types of interaction may help bridge things for you.
  • Pay attention to your needs — your definition can offer clues about whether you function best with greater internal consistency or greater spaciousness and external input.
  • Stop comparing your style to others — you are not meant to process, integrate, or move through life exactly the way someone else does.
  • Work with your wiring, not against it — the more you understand your natural processing style, the easier it becomes to support yourself in practical ways.
