Defined Energy Centers in Human Design

human design strategy and authority

how you're designed to make decisions

Strategy and authority are the foundation of Human Design. They are most important because they show you how you’re designed to make decisions and move through life in alignment.

When you follow your strategy and authority, things in your life tend to flow more easily. When you dismiss or ignore them, you may experience resistance, frustration, or confusion.

This guide will help you understand:

  • What strategy is
  • What authority is
  • How they work together
  • How to find yours
  • How to start using it

what is "strategy" in human design?

Your strategy is how you’re designed to use your energy, interact with life, and attract opportunities. Each energy type has a specific strategy that helps them move in alignment.

Strategies by type:

  • Generator — “to respond”
  • Manifesting Generator — “to respond”
  • Projector — “wait for the invitation”
  • Manifestor — “to inform”
  • Reflector — “wait a lunar cycle”

what is "authority" in human design?

Your authority shows you how you’re designed to make decisions. It is the voice of your intuition or your internal guidance system.

Your authority is more important than mental logic, advice, or outside opinions.

Authority types include:

  • Emotional authority
  • Sacral authority
  • Splenic authority
  • Ego (or heart-centered) authority
  • Self-projected (G-Center) authority
  • Mental authority
  • No Inner (Lunar) authority

strategy vs. authority

what's the difference?

Your strategy tells you how to use your energy and often points the way.
Your authority determines how to decide. It tells you when to say yes or no.

Strategy comes first. Authority comes second.

For Example, a Generator Energy Type with Emotional authority

  • The Generator responds (strategy) to something they see in the outside world, then they check their emotional authority by allowing time for the correct answer to come to them.

how to find your strategy and authority

You can find your strategy and authority in your Human Design bodygraph chart.

Steps:

  1. Find your energy type
  2. Identify your strategy
  3. Discover your authority
  4. Begin experimenting

human design authority types

Emotional Authority

Your decision-making guidance comes from your Solar Plexus energy center, which means clarity unfolds over time through your emotional wave. Like ocean tides, your feelings move through highs, lows, and neutral moments—each phase offering information. You’re not designed to decide in the moment. The most aligned choices come after you’ve ridden the wave and reached a calm, neutral state where you feel cool, clear, and collected.

Sacral Authority

Your decision-making guidance comes from your gut response in the present moment. You’re designed to feel an immediate “yes” or “no” based on what brings excitement, energy, and satisfaction — even if you can’t logically explain why. Unlike instincts, your sacral response provides clarity in the now. This response works best when you’re reacting to options or choices, rather than answering open-ended questions.

Splenic Authority

Your decision-making guidance comes from quiet, instinctive intuition in the present moment. Splenic authority speaks as an instant knowing — a subtle sense that something is right for you, or immediate unease when it isn’t. This awareness is spontaneous, moment-to-moment, and doesn’t repeat itself, so it’s meant to be trusted as it arises.

Ego (or Heart-Centered) Authority

Your decision-making guidance comes from your heart’s desires, willpower, and motivation. This authority isn’t reflective — it’s a direct inner voice asking, “Do I truly want this?” or “Will this empower me?” When something is aligned, you feel a strong heart-pull and the drive to make it happen. Following what you “selfishly” want simply means honoring what your heart genuinely desires.

Self-Projected (or G-Center) Authority

Your decision-making guidance comes from a deep inner knowing that arises from your G-Center. This authority often feels like “I just know,” even if you can’t explain why. It’s a gentle, subtle sense of what is right or not right for you, and it may even show up as a physical feeling in the center of your chest. This knowing is personal and internal — your role is simply to recognize how it shows up and learn to trust it.

Mental Authority

Your decision-making guidance comes from your mind through observation, perspective, and the information you pick up energetically in the environment. This authority relies on your ability to take in information, notice patterns, and develop clarity by seeing what feels right over time. Your mind blends logic and intuitive insight, helping you recognize the right direction through your observations and thoughts rather than immediate inner certainty.

No Inner (Lunar) Authority

Your decision-making guidance is designed to gain clarity over time rather than through an immediate internal signal. This authority is unique to Reflectors and is connected to the lunar cycle, with decisions becoming clearer over time, in environments, through conversation, and by paying close attention to the energy you experience around the decision.

how to start using your authority

Begin tuning into the voice of your authority by:

  • Understanding how your authority works
  • Noticing when a decision arises, pause before reacting
  • Listen or tune into your authority (how do you feel in your body)
  • Experimenting – trust your inner knowing and say “YES” or “NO” even when it doesn’t make logical sense
  • Observe the outcomes
